Description
Maat is the Egyptian goddess of truth, justice, harmony, balance, and order. She is often depicted as a young woman with an ostrich feather on her head or wings on each arm. Maat is the daughter of the sun god Ra and was created when Ra arose from the waters of Nun (chaos). She was the devoted wife of Thoth (the god of wisdom). Ancient legends state that when a person dies, Maat uses a scale and her feather to weigh their heart. If the heart is pure, the scale will remain balanced with the feather and the soul will be sent to Osiris (the god of the underworld). If the heart is evil and is not in balance with the feather of truth, the soul is sent to Ammut to be devoured. There are 42 ideals (laws) of Maat that form the core principles of morality and justice.
Some ways to honor Maat are upholding her 7 core principles, visiting halls of justice, and creating an altar for offerings. You can place things on altar such as scales, an ankh, white candles, amethyst, rose water, red or white feathers (ostrich if available) placed on a black or purple cloth.
